Firing Range Inspection

Ventilation and Lead Control on Ranges

An indoor firing range generates airborne lead from primers and rounds, and the ventilation controlling it must be examined and tested like any other LEV system, in line with the lead regulations.

Our P601-qualified examiners test that air moves down-range away from the shooters at the right velocity, that supply and extract are balanced, and that lead-laden air is filtered before discharge, then set out clearly whether control is adequate.

What's included

What's covered in firing range LEV testing

Down-Range Velocity

We measure the down-range air velocity at the firing line, the figure that keeps lead-laden air moving away from the shooters. Insufficient down-range velocity at the firing line is a defect we report.

Balance and Airflow Direction

We check the supply and extract balance and the direction of airflow, away from the shooters. Poor air balance leaving dead spots where lead lingers, and turbulence drawing fume back toward the shooters, are common findings.

Filtration

We assess the filtration of the lead-laden extract air before discharge. Loaded filters on the lead-laden extract are a recurring issue.

Fan, Ducting and Capture

We check the fan performance and static pressures, the ducting and discharge, and capture at the bullet trap or butts.

Performance Against Benchmark

We measure the system against its design benchmark and state clearly whether control of airborne lead is adequate.

How it works

Your firing range ventilation test, start to finish

Every scheme your equipment is required to meet under UK regulation carried out by accredited engineers and backed by compliant reports.

1

Book

Let us have the range details and location, and we confirm a date and a fixed quote, usually same day.

2

On-site examination

A P601-qualified examiner attends and tests the down-range airflow and filtration.

3

Compliant report

Within three days you get your report, with velocity readings, balance and any defects.

4

Reminders

We track the due date and remind you before the range ventilation needs testing again.

OUR STANDARDS

Lead control we take seriously

We take our responsibilities seriously, upholding the highest standards of professionalism, quality and safety across every aspect of our operations.

Quality Assurance

Airflow and filtration measured by P601-qualified examiners who test to a recognised standard.

Responsibility

A thorough test that establishes whether airborne lead is controlled, in line with the lead regulations.

Care

The health of everyone on the firing line drives the work, and our reports give a clear, honest verdict.

FAQ

Common Firing Range Inspection Questions

How often does a firing range ventilation system need testing?

LEV systems are generally examined and tested at least every 14 months, and for a lead-control system like a range, regular testing at that kind of interval is expected given the risk. A fresh test is also due after any change to the range or its ventilation.

What does LEV testing on a firing range actually check?

Mainly that air moves down-range away from the shooters at the right velocity, that supply and extract are balanced with no dead spots, and that lead-laden air is filtered properly before it is discharged.

Do I legally need an LEV test?

If you rely on an LEV system to control exposure to a hazardous substance, the law requires it to be thoroughly examined and tested, and failing to do so is a criminal offence. A competent person's report, kept on record, is how you show you are compliant.

What happens if the system fails the test?

Your report sets out exactly where the system falls short and how serious it is, with clear recommendations. You then know precisely what to put right to bring both the control and your compliance back up to standard.

Do you carry out LEV testing on site?

Yes. Our examiners come to your premises across Berkshire and the surrounding counties and test the system in place, under normal working conditions, with reports issued promptly.
