Air Receiver Inspection
Air Receivers as Pressure Vessels
An air receiver is a pressure vessel, and a failure releases a lot of stored energy at once, which is exactly why PSSR 2000 requires it to be examined to a Written Scheme of Examination. We assess it inside and out to the scheme, along with the fittings it relies on - its safety valve, pressure gauge and drain valve.
Nexus can both draw up the scheme and carry out the examinations to satisfy Regulation 9.

What's included
What's covered in an air receiver examination
External Condition
We examine the external condition for corrosion, distortion, dents and coating breakdown, particularly at the supports and base. External corrosion at the supports is a common finding.
Internal Condition
We examine the internal condition to the scheme for corrosion, scale and water damage. Air receivers fail from the inside out, so internal corrosion or water damage from poor draining is what we are looking for.
Branches and Welds
We check the branches, welds and openings, where stress concentrates. Pitting around welds and branches is something we regularly report.
Fittings
We examine the fittings the vessel relies on - the safety valve, pressure gauge and drain - and confirm they match the safe operating limits.
Data Plate and Supports
We confirm the data plate and safe operating limits are present and legible, and check the supports and foundations. A missing or illegible data plate is a defect we flag.
How it works
Your air receiver's PSSR examination, start to finish
Every scheme your equipment is required to meet under UK regulation carried out by accredited engineers and backed by compliant reports.
1
Book
Let us know about the receiver and where it is, and we lock in a date and a fixed quote, usually same day.
2
On-site examination
A competent examiner attends and examines the vessel inside and out to your scheme.
3
Compliant report
You have your examination report within three days, with internal and external findings and defects.
4
Reminders
We keep the scheme's due date on file and remind you before it comes round.
OUR STANDARDS
Pressure vessels examined inside and out
We take our responsibilities seriously, upholding the highest standards of professionalism, quality and safety across every aspect of our operations.
Quality Assurance
Vessels examined inside and out by competent examiners who work to your Written Scheme, not a quick glance.
Responsibility
A rigorous examination that satisfies PSSR 2000 and gives you the report your compliance depends on.
Care
An air receiver fails where you cannot see, so a proper internal examination is exactly what we give it.

FAQ
Your Air Receiver Inspection Questions, Answered
How often does an air receiver need inspecting?
Whatever your Written Scheme of Examination specifies. A competent person sets it, and air receivers commonly carry an external examination more often than the internal one, often somewhere between 12 and 48 months depending on the receiver and its conditions.
Why do air receivers corrode from the inside?
Condensate collects in the bottom of the receiver, and if the drain is not working it sits there and corrodes the vessel from within. That is why both the internal examination and the drain matter.
What is a Written Scheme of Examination?
It is the document, drawn up by a competent person, that sets out which parts of your pressure system must be examined, how, and how often. PSSR requires one before the system is used. We can write the scheme for you and then carry out the examinations to it.
Do you carry out PSSR examinations on site?
Yes. Our examiners come to your premises across Berkshire and the surrounding counties, examine the system in place, and issue the report promptly.
Do I legally need a PSSR examination?
If you operate a pressure system that stores energy - compressed air, steam or refrigeration - PSSR 2000 makes it your duty to have a Written Scheme of Examination and to examine the system to it. Running without one is a criminal offence, and a competent person's report is your evidence of compliance.
