About Cherry Picker Examinations
Cherry pickers are boom-type MEWPs, articulated or telescopic, and like any platform that lifts people they fall under the 6-monthly LOLER examination rule. Van-mounted, trailer or self-propelled makes no difference to the duty.
We examine yours on site, with an Engineer Surveyor reporting on each safety-critical system.

What's included
What's covered in a cherry picker inspection
Boom and Slew
We examine the boom sections, pivots and the articulating or telescopic mechanism, plus the slew ring, turntable and rotation drive. Wear and play in the boom pivots and slew ring are common findings.
Ropes and Hydraulics
We check any wire ropes or chains inside telescopic booms, and the hydraulic cylinders, rams and hoses for leaks and damage. Hydraulic leaks affecting boom and outrigger function are frequent.
Basket and Fall Protection
We inspect the basket or cage, its levelling system and entry gate, and the harness anchorage points. Basket levelling out of adjustment is a defect we regularly report.
Outriggers and Controls
We test the outriggers, stabilisers and their interlocks, the ground and platform controls, and the emergency lowering and stop. Faulty outrigger interlocks or sensors are a recurring issue.
Sensors and Markings
We check the tilt, overload and range sensors and confirm the safe working load and platform capacity markings are present and legible, so the platform is only worked within its limits.

Cherry Picker Inspections: What People Ask
How frequently should a cherry picker be examined?
At least every 6 months, as with any people-lifting platform. A written scheme of examination can require it more often, and exceptional events trigger an extra examination.
Is a cherry picker a type of MEWP?
Yes. It is the boom type of Mobile Elevating Work Platform, either articulated or telescopic, and like all MEWPs it lifts people and needs examining every 6 months.
Do I legally need a LOLER examination?
If your business owns, operates or controls lifting equipment, then yes. LOLER 1998 makes it your legal duty to have it thoroughly examined by a competent person and to keep the resulting report.
What's the difference between LOLER and PUWER?
LOLER deals with the lifting side of your equipment, while PUWER covers it as work equipment more broadly. Plenty of machines need both, and we carry out PUWER examinations too.
Do you carry out examinations on site?
Yes. Our Engineer Surveyors come to your premises across Berkshire and the surrounding counties, and we issue reports promptly.
