Lifting Accessories Inspection

Why Accessories Are on a 6-Month Cycle

Lifting accessories are everything between the hook and the load: chain slings, webbing and round slings, wire rope slings, shackles, eyebolts, plate clamps and lifting beams. They work hard and wear fast, so LOLER 1998 puts them on a thorough examination at least every 6 months.

Our Engineer Surveyors examine your accessories on site, identify each one and report item by item on what is safe to use.

Lifting Accessories LOLER Inspections

What's included

What's covered in a lifting accessories inspection

Chain Slings

We examine each link, master link and hook for stretch, wear, nicks and distortion, and check the hook safety catches. Stretched links and opened-out hooks are the chain sling defects we find most.

Webbing and Round Slings

We inspect for cuts, abrasion, heat and chemical damage, damaged stitching and exposed core yarns. Cut or chafed webbing is the most common reason a textile sling is withdrawn.

Wire Rope Slings

We check for broken wires, kinks, birdcaging, corrosion and damaged terminations or ferrules, which decide whether a wire rope sling stays in service.

Shackles, Eyebolts and Hooks

We examine shackle bodies and pins, eyebolts and hooks for wear, distortion and thread damage. Mismatched or bent shackle pins are a frequent finding.

Clamps, Beams and Markings

We check plate clamps and spreader or lifting beams for wear and cracking, and confirm every item carries a legible safe working load and unique ID so it can be traced to the report.

FAQ

Lifting Accessories Inspection FAQs

How often do lifting accessories need examining?

At least every 6 months under LOLER, unless a written scheme of examination sets a different period. Any accessory involved in an overload or damaged in use should be examined again before it goes back into service.

What counts as a lifting accessory?

Anything used to attach the load to the lifting equipment that is not part of the load itself, such as slings, shackles, hooks, eyebolts, plate clamps, spreader and lifting beams, and the chains and strops carried on recovery vehicles.

Do lifting accessories need to be marked?

Yes. LOLER requires lifting accessories to be marked with their safe working load, and each item needs to be identifiable so it can be matched to its report of thorough examination.

Do I legally need a LOLER examination?

If your business owns, operates or controls lifting equipment, then yes. LOLER 1998 makes it your legal duty to have it thoroughly examined by a competent person and to keep the resulting report.

Do you carry out examinations on site?

Yes. Our Engineer Surveyors come to your premises across Berkshire and the surrounding counties, and we issue reports promptly.
