Bearing Press Inspection

Bearing Presses Under PUWER

A bearing press is work equipment under PUWER 1998, so Regulation 6 requires it to be inspected at suitable intervals by a competent person where wear or damage could make it dangerous. This is different from a power press, which carries its own stricter statutory examination.

We inspect yours on site and report clearly on its condition.

What's included

What's covered in a bearing press inspection

Frame and Welds

We examine the frame, uprights and welds for cracks and distortion. Cracked welds on the frame are a serious finding, given the energy a press stores.

Ram and Hydraulics

We check the ram, cylinder and piston for leaks and smooth travel, and the hydraulic pump and hoses. A ram that won't hold pressure and hydraulic leaks are the faults we see most.

Gauge and Overload

We test the pressure gauge and the pressure relief or overload device. A faulty or inaccurate gauge leaves the operator working blind, so we flag it.

Bed and Guarding

We inspect the bed, bolster and support pins for wear and security, and the guarding and shielding against ejected parts. Missing or inadequate guarding is a common and dangerous defect.

Controls and Markings

We check the controls, the foot pedal where fitted and the return mechanism, the base stability and mountings, and confirm the rated capacity marking is present and legible.

FAQ

Your Bearing Press Inspection Questions, Answered

How often does a bearing press need inspecting?

PUWER sets no fixed period for a bearing press. Regulation 6 puts it on a suitable-interval inspection judged by use and condition, plus after any exceptional event. A yearly inspection is a common baseline.

Is a bearing press the same as a power press?

No. A power press for cold metalworking carries a stricter statutory thorough examination, every 6 or 12 months depending on its guards. A bearing or hydraulic workshop press is inspected under PUWER Regulation 6 at suitable intervals instead.

What's the difference between PUWER and LOLER?

PUWER applies to all work equipment, which must be suitable, maintained and inspected as the risk requires. LOLER adds extra duties for equipment that lifts. Anything that lifts may need both, while the equipment on this page falls under PUWER.

Do you carry out inspections on site?

Yes. Our Engineer Surveyors come to your premises across Berkshire and the surrounding counties, and we issue reports promptly.

Do I legally need a PUWER inspection?

If you provide work equipment for use at work, PUWER 1998 makes its safety your responsibility, and Regulation 6 calls for inspection wherever the equipment could deteriorate and become dangerous. A competent person's inspection, recorded and kept on file, is how you show you have met that duty.
