Scissor Lift Inspection

Scissor Lifts Under LOLER

A scissor lift is a vertical MEWP, so it sits in the people-lifting category and needs examining at least every 6 months under LOLER 1998. From small electric units used indoors to heavy rough-terrain diesel machines, the requirement holds.

Our Engineer Surveyors carry out the examination at your site and set out their findings on every safety-critical part.

What's included

What's covered in a scissor lift inspection

Scissor Arms and Structure

We examine the scissor arms, pivot pins and bushes for wear and play, and the welds and structure for cracks and corrosion. Worn pins and bushes causing excessive play are the classic scissor lift finding.

Hydraulic System

We check the lift cylinders, hoses and the hydraulic system for leaks and confirm the lift holds under load. Leaks from the cylinders and hoses are among the faults we see most.

Platform and Guarding

We inspect the guardrails, gates, toe boards and the platform deck that keep people safe at height. Damaged guardrails and sticking access gates are common defects.

Controls and Emergency Systems

We test the ground and platform controls and changeover, the emergency lowering and the emergency stop. A faulty emergency lowering system is something we report regularly.

Stability, Drive and Markings

We check the pothole protection bars, tilt or level sensors, the wheels, drive and brakes, and confirm the safe working load and platform capacity markings. Pothole protection failing to deploy is a fault we flag.

FAQ

Questions About Scissor Lift Inspections

Is a scissor lift classed as a MEWP?

Yes. It is the vertical kind of Mobile Elevating Work Platform, rising straight up on a folding scissor mechanism. Because it lifts people, the 6-monthly interval applies.

What is the LOLER examination interval for a scissor lift?

Six months at most, since a scissor lift lifts people. The period can be shorter under a written scheme of examination, and an examination is also triggered by exceptional circumstances.

Do you carry out examinations on site?

Yes. Our Engineer Surveyors come to your premises across Berkshire and the surrounding counties, and we issue reports promptly.

Do I legally need a LOLER examination?

If your business owns, operates or controls lifting equipment, then yes. LOLER 1998 makes it your legal duty to have it thoroughly examined by a competent person and to keep the resulting report.

What's the difference between LOLER and PUWER?

LOLER deals with the lifting side of your equipment, while PUWER covers it as work equipment more broadly. Plenty of machines need both, and we carry out PUWER examinations too.
