Why Axle Stands Need Inspecting
Axle stands hold serious weight while people work beneath, which is exactly why PUWER 1998 treats them as work equipment to be inspected. Under Regulation 6 a competent person should examine them at suitable intervals for any wear or damage that could let the load down.

Legs and Column
We examine the legs, base and column for bending, cracks and corrosion. Bent or splayed legs and corrosion weakening the structure are defects we regularly find.
Locking Mechanism
We check the ratchet or pin height-locking mechanism and that it engages positively. Worn ratchet teeth or a missing locking pin is the fault that drops a vehicle, so it comes first.
Welds and Joints
We inspect the welds and joints for integrity. Cracked welds on a load-bearing stand are a serious finding.
Saddle and Base
We check the saddle or cup for wear and deformation and the feet and base for stability on the floor.
Rating and Pairing
We confirm the rated load marking is present and legible, and that matched pairs are set to a consistent height. A missing or illegible load rating is a common defect.

Questions About Axle Stand Inspections
Do axle stands really need a formal inspection?
Yes. They are load-bearing work equipment, and a bent leg or worn ratchet can drop a vehicle onto whoever is underneath. A competent person's inspection catches that before it happens.
How often do axle stands need inspecting?
PUWER does not prescribe an interval. They should be inspected at suitable intervals set by a risk assessment, and any time something happens that could affect their integrity. Given what they hold up, at least an annual check is sensible, on top of a look-over before use.
Do I legally need a PUWER inspection?
If you provide work equipment for use at work, PUWER 1998 makes its safety your responsibility, and Regulation 6 calls for inspection wherever the equipment could deteriorate and become dangerous. A competent person's inspection, recorded and kept on file, is how you show you have met that duty.
What's the difference between PUWER and LOLER?
PUWER applies to all work equipment, which must be suitable, maintained and inspected as the risk requires. LOLER adds extra duties for equipment that lifts. Anything that lifts may need both, while the equipment on this page falls under PUWER.
