Drain Valve Inspection

The Humble Drain Valve

A drain valve looks trivial, but it clears the condensate that would otherwise sit in the bottom of a receiver and corrode it from the inside. Under PSSR it is examined as part of the pressure system's Written Scheme of Examination.

We check it actually drains, and we examine the air receiver it protects.

What's included

What's covered in a drain valve examination

Does It Drain

We confirm the valve actually drains the condensate, the one thing it exists to do. A seized or blocked valve that no longer drains is the most common fault we find.

Operation

We check the manual or automatic operation. An automatic drain that has stopped working leaves condensate sitting in the vessel.

Seat and Seals

We examine the seat and seal condition and check for leakage. Weeping or leaking seals are a regular finding.

Corrosion and Blockage

We check the valve body for corrosion and blockage that stop it functioning.

Effect on the Receiver

We check whether the receiver is waterlogged, the tell-tale sign the drain has failed and the vessel is corroding from the inside.

How it works

Your drain valve's PSSR examination, start to finish

Every scheme your equipment is required to meet under UK regulation carried out by accredited engineers and backed by compliant reports.

1

Book

Let us have the system details and your site, and we confirm a date and a fixed quote, usually same day.

2

On-site examination

A competent examiner attends and confirms the drain clears condensate as it should, on site.

3

Compliant report

Within three days you get your examination report, with the findings and any defects set out.

4

Reminders

We track the scheme's due date and remind you before the next examination is needed.

OUR STANDARDS

The small part that protects the vessel

We take our responsibilities seriously, upholding the highest standards of professionalism, quality and safety across every aspect of our operations.

Quality Assurance

A small part checked properly by competent examiners, because the vessel depends on it.

Responsibility

An examination to your Written Scheme that keeps the receiver, and your compliance, in good order.

Care

A failed drain quietly corrodes a vessel from the inside, so we make sure this one is doing its job.

FAQ

Drain Valve Inspection: Common Queries

What goes wrong when a drain valve fails?

Condensate stops clearing and pools in the receiver, corroding it from the inside while everything looks fine externally. A seized or blocked drain is one of the most common faults we find on air systems.

How often should a drain valve be inspected?

On the schedule in your Written Scheme of Examination. Drain valves are usually examined with the receiver they serve, at the interval the competent person sets, because a failed drain quietly damages the vessel from the inside.

What is a Written Scheme of Examination?

It is the document, drawn up by a competent person, that sets out which parts of your pressure system must be examined, how, and how often. PSSR requires one before the system is used. We can write the scheme for you and then carry out the examinations to it.

Do I legally need a PSSR examination?

If you operate a pressure system that stores energy - compressed air, steam or refrigeration - PSSR 2000 makes it your duty to have a Written Scheme of Examination and to examine the system to it. Running without one is a criminal offence, and a competent person's report is your evidence of compliance.

Do you carry out PSSR examinations on site?

Yes. Our examiners come to your premises across Berkshire and the surrounding counties, examine the system in place, and issue the report promptly.
