Forklift Inspection
Forklift Trucks and LOLER
A forklift truck is lifting equipment in the eyes of LOLER 1998, which puts it on a 12-monthly thorough examination cycle - or a 6-monthly one if it carries a platform for lifting people. Counterbalance, reach or rough-terrain, the obligation is the same.
Our Engineer Surveyors examine yours where it works, then hand back a clear report covering every part that bears on safety.

What's included
What's covered in a forklift inspection
Forks and Carriage
We inspect the forks for heel wear, cracks, bending and worn locating pins, then check the carriage, backrest and any fitted attachments. These take the most direct load, so they come first in every forklift thorough examination.
Lift Chains and Mast
We measure the lift chains for stretch, wear and even tension, and check the mast, channels and rollers for wear and alignment. Stretched chains and a misaligned mast are two of the most common LOLER inspection failures.
Hydraulic System
We check the hydraulic rams, hoses and tilt mechanism for leaks, then test the lift, lower and tilt functions under load to confirm they hold safely rather than creep or drop.
Overhead Guard and Operator Protection
We examine the overhead guard and load backrest, the parts that protect the operator from falling loads. Damage here fails the examination on safety grounds on its own.
Capacity and Load Markings
We confirm the capacity plate and safe working load markings are present, legible and correct, so the truck is only ever rated for what it can actually lift.

FAQ
Forklift Inspection: Common Questions
Do I legally need a LOLER examination?
If your business owns, operates or controls lifting equipment, then yes. LOLER 1998 makes it your legal duty to have it thoroughly examined by a competent person and to keep the resulting report.
How often must a forklift be examined under LOLER?
Every 12 months for a truck that lifts loads, or every 6 months if it carries a platform to lift people. A written scheme of examination can set a different period, and an examination is needed after any exceptional event.
Is a LOLER examination the same as the daily operator check?
No. The daily pre-use check is the operator's responsibility and catches the obvious. A LOLER thorough examination is a separate, in-depth assessment by a competent person, and one does not replace the other.
What's the difference between LOLER and PUWER?
LOLER deals with the lifting side of your equipment, while PUWER covers it as work equipment more broadly. Plenty of machines need both, and we carry out PUWER examinations too.
Do you carry out examinations on site?
Yes. Our Engineer Surveyors come to your premises across Berkshire and the surrounding counties, and we issue reports promptly.
