MEWP Inspection

Why MEWPs Need a 6-Monthly Examination

The defining thing about a Mobile Elevating Work Platform is that it lifts people, and LOLER 1998 treats people-lifting equipment more strictly: a thorough examination by a competent person at least every 6 months. The MEWP family takes in scissor lifts, cherry pickers and truck- or spider-mounted platforms.

Whichever you run, our Engineer Surveyors examine it on site and report on every safety-critical system.

What's included

What's covered in a MEWP inspection

Structure and Lifting Mechanism

We examine the chassis, base frame and structure for cracks and corrosion, along with the booms, scissor stack or telescopic sections as fitted. Worn pins and bushes in the lifting structure are a common finding.

Hydraulics

We check the hydraulic rams, hoses and cylinders for leaks and confirm lift and lowering work cleanly. Hydraulic leaks affecting lift and lowering are among the faults we see most.

Controls and Emergency Systems

We test the ground and platform controls including changeover, and the emergency lowering and emergency stop. Untested or faulty emergency lowering is a defect we report often.

Platform and Fall Protection

We inspect the guardrails, toe boards and the platform or cage, and the harness anchorage points workers clip onto. Damaged guardrails or missing anchor points fail the examination.

Stability, Sensors and Markings

We check the outriggers, stabilisers and the tilt or overload sensors, and confirm the safe working load and platform capacity markings are legible. Sensors out of calibration are a recurring issue.

FAQ

Your MEWP Inspection Questions, Answered

How often does a MEWP need examining?

At least every 6 months, because it lifts people. A written scheme of examination may shorten that, and a fresh examination is needed after installation or anything that could compromise safety.

Are scissor lifts and cherry pickers MEWPs?

Yes. A scissor lift is the vertical type and a cherry picker is the boom type. Both lift people, so both fall on the 6-monthly LOLER interval.

What's the difference between LOLER and PUWER?

LOLER deals with the lifting side of your equipment, while PUWER covers it as work equipment more broadly. Plenty of machines need both, and we carry out PUWER examinations too.

Do I legally need a LOLER examination?

If your business owns, operates or controls lifting equipment, then yes. LOLER 1998 makes it your legal duty to have it thoroughly examined by a competent person and to keep the resulting report.

Do you carry out examinations on site?

Yes. Our Engineer Surveyors come to your premises across Berkshire and the surrounding counties, and we issue reports promptly.
