Welding Fume Extraction

Welding Fume and COSHH

Welding fume is a recognised carcinogen - the HSE confirmed that for all welding, mild steel included, back in 2019. So extraction is not optional indoors, and under COSHH the system has to be thoroughly examined and tested to prove it works.

Our P601-qualified examiners test yours on site, measuring capture at the arc and the performance of the whole system, then report on whether it is genuinely controlling exposure.

Welding Fume Extraction

What's included

What's covered in welding fume LEV testing

Capture at the Arc

We measure the capture velocity at the extraction arm, hood or on-torch nozzle, and check how it is positioned relative to the arc. An extraction arm parked too far from the arc to capture fume is the fault we find most.

Ductwork and Transport

We check the ductwork condition and the transport velocity carrying fume away. Leaking or damaged ductwork that bleeds away performance is a common finding.

Fan and Filters

We assess fan performance and static pressures, and the filter condition and loading. Loaded or neglected filters quietly choke a system that looks like it is running fine.

Discharge and Recirculation

We check discharge to atmosphere, or the cleaning stage if the air is recirculated. Recirculation of inadequately cleaned air back into the workshop is a defect we flag.

Performance Against Benchmark

We confirm capture effectiveness at the actual working position and measure the whole system against its commissioning benchmark, so the result reflects real control, not just a running fan.

How it works

Your welding fume extraction LEV test, start to finish

Every scheme your equipment is required to meet under UK regulation carried out by accredited engineers and backed by compliant reports.

1

Book

Tell us your system and location, and we confirm a date and a fixed quote, usually same day.

2

On-site examination

A P601-qualified examiner attends and tests the system under normal working conditions.

3

Compliant report

You receive a full LEV report within three days, with measurements, defects and what to put right.

4

Reminders

We track your 14-month due date and remind you before the next test is required.

OUR STANDARDS

LEV testing where control comes first

We take our responsibilities seriously, upholding the highest standards of professionalism, quality and safety across every aspect of our operations.

Quality Assurance

Measurements taken by P601-qualified examiners who test to a recognised standard and stay current with LEV best practice.

Responsibility

A rigorous test that establishes whether exposure is genuinely controlled and keeps you compliant with COSHH.

Care

The health of the people at the arc drives the work. Our reports give you a clear, honest picture and real peace of mind.

FAQ

Welding Fume Extraction Testing FAQs

How often does welding fume extraction need testing?

At least every 14 months under COSHH, like most LEV. Because that is the maximum, yearly testing keeps you comfortably inside it. Some higher-risk processes need testing more often, and a fresh test is due after any change that could affect performance.

Is welding fume really that dangerous?

Yes. Since 2019 the HSE has treated all welding fume, including from mild steel, as a carcinogen, so effective extraction and regular LEV testing are now expected wherever welding is done indoors.

Do I legally need an LEV test?

If you rely on an LEV system to control exposure to a hazardous substance, the law requires it to be thoroughly examined and tested, and failing to do so is a criminal offence. A competent person's report, kept on record, is how you show you are compliant.

What does the LEV report include?

A diagram of the system, the airflow and capture measurements taken at each point, a comparison against how it should perform, and a clear statement of whether it is controlling exposure, along with any defects and what to do about them.

Do you carry out LEV testing on site?

Yes. Our examiners come to your premises across Berkshire and the surrounding counties and test the system in place, under normal working conditions, with reports issued promptly.
