Refrigerant Receiver Inspection
Refrigeration and PSSR
A refrigerant receiver holds refrigerant under pressure, so it is a pressure vessel under PSSR 2000 and must be examined to a Written Scheme of Examination. We assess its condition, valves and controls, and the safety valve protecting it.
Nexus can write the scheme and carry out the examinations to satisfy Regulation 9.

What's included
What's covered in a refrigerant receiver examination
External Condition
We assess the external condition, corrosion and mountings of the vessel. External corrosion at the mountings is a common finding on refrigeration receivers.
Internal Condition
We examine the internal condition where accessible, to the scheme, because a refrigeration vessel stores energy like any other pressure vessel.
Relief Device
We check the relief device or pressure relief valve. A relief device past its date or of the wrong rating is the defect we flag hardest.
Pressure Controls
We test the high and low pressure controls and cut-outs. Faulty pressure cut-outs are something we regularly report.
Valves, Sight Glass and Plate
We check the sight glass, valves and connections, and confirm the data plate and safe operating limits. Leaking valves or connections, and a missing data plate, are common findings.
How it works
Your refrigerant receiver's PSSR examination, start to finish
Every scheme your equipment is required to meet under UK regulation carried out by accredited engineers and backed by compliant reports.
1
Book
Tell us about the system and the site, and we'll set a date and a fixed quote, usually same day.
2
On-site examination
A competent examiner attends and examines the vessel, controls and relief device to your scheme.
3
Compliant report
You receive your examination report within three days, with any defects and timescales listed.
4
Reminders
We note the scheme's due date and remind you before another examination is required.
OUR STANDARDS
Refrigeration pressure taken seriously
We take our responsibilities seriously, upholding the highest standards of professionalism, quality and safety across every aspect of our operations.
Quality Assurance
Refrigeration vessels examined by competent examiners who treat them as the pressure equipment they are.
Responsibility
A thorough examination to your Written Scheme that keeps your refrigeration system compliant with PSSR 2000.
Care
These vessels are easy to forget, but they store energy like any other, so we give them the same care.

FAQ
Refrigerant Receiver Inspection: What People Ask
How often does a refrigerant receiver need examining?
As laid down in your Written Scheme of Examination, set by a competent person. Refrigeration pressure vessels typically sit in the 12 to 48 month range depending on the system, with the scheme being the authority rather than a fixed rule.
What is a Written Scheme of Examination?
It is the document, drawn up by a competent person, that sets out which parts of your pressure system must be examined, how, and how often. PSSR requires one before the system is used. We can write the scheme for you and then carry out the examinations to it.
Does PSSR apply to refrigeration systems?
Yes, where the system stores refrigerant under pressure. The receiver and its protective devices fall under PSSR and need examining to a Written Scheme of Examination, just like a compressed air system.
What happens if something fails the examination?
Your report sets out every defect and how serious it is, with anything dangerous flagged at once so it can be taken out of service until it is put right.
Do I legally need a PSSR examination?
If you operate a pressure system that stores energy - compressed air, steam or refrigeration - PSSR 2000 makes it your duty to have a Written Scheme of Examination and to examine the system to it. Running without one is a criminal offence, and a competent person's report is your evidence of compliance.
