Dumper Inspection

Site Dumpers as Work Equipment

A site dumper is work equipment and mobile plant under PUWER 1998, so Regulation 6 calls for inspection at suitable intervals by a competent person - brakes, steering, the tipping mechanism and operator protection included.

Our Engineer Surveyors inspect yours on site and report clearly on its condition.

What's included

What's covered in a dumper inspection

Operator Protection

We examine the ROPS or FOPS and the operator restraint or seatbelt, the things that save the driver in an overturn. Damaged or removed ROPS and a missing or cut seatbelt are defects we report at once.

Brakes

We test the service and parking brakes. Worn service or parking brakes are among the most common dumper findings.

Steering and Tipping

We check the steering and articulation joint, and the skip, tipping mechanism and its hydraulics. Hydraulic leaks on the tipping ram are a frequent fault.

Running Gear and Structure

We inspect the tyres, wheels and hubs, and the chassis, welds and load area for cracks and damage.

Controls and Visibility

We check the controls, horn, lights and reversing alarm, plus mirrors and visibility aids and the guarding over hot and moving parts. A faulty reversing alarm or horn is a defect we regularly pick up.

FAQ

Common Dumper Inspection Questions

How often does a site dumper need a PUWER inspection?

PUWER sets no fixed period. Regulation 6 wants inspection at suitable intervals based on the dumper's use and conditions, plus after exceptional circumstances. For site plant worked this hard, at least an annual inspection is the usual baseline.

Are site dumpers covered by PUWER?

Yes. A site dumper is mobile work equipment under PUWER, so its brakes, steering, tipping gear and operator protection should be inspected at suitable intervals by a competent person.

Do I legally need a PUWER inspection?

If you provide work equipment for use at work, PUWER 1998 makes its safety your responsibility, and Regulation 6 calls for inspection wherever the equipment could deteriorate and become dangerous. A competent person's inspection, recorded and kept on file, is how you show you have met that duty.

What's the difference between PUWER and LOLER?

PUWER applies to all work equipment, which must be suitable, maintained and inspected as the risk requires. LOLER adds extra duties for equipment that lifts. Anything that lifts may need both, while the equipment on this page falls under PUWER.

Do you carry out inspections on site?

Yes. Our Engineer Surveyors come to your premises across Berkshire and the surrounding counties, and we issue reports promptly.
