Platform Lift Inspection

Why Platform Lifts Are Examined Every 6 Months

A platform lift carries people, usually wheelchair users, between levels, so LOLER 1998 puts it on the 6-monthly thorough examination cycle that applies to all people-lifting equipment. Vertical or inclined, enclosed or open, the requirement is the same.

Our Engineer Surveyors examine platform lifts in offices, shops, schools and public buildings, and report clearly on everything that bears on safety.

What's included

What's covered in a platform lift inspection

Gates, Doors and Interlocks

We check the landing gates or doors, their locks and the interlocks that stop the platform moving with a gate open. Faulty or bypassed interlocks are a serious and common finding.

Drive System

We examine the drive, whether screw and nut, rope, chain or hydraulic, for wear and leaks. A worn drive nut or safety nut is one of the defects we most often report.

Safety Edges and Sensors

We test the safety edges, under-platform sensors and obstruction detection that stop the lift when something is in the way.

Emergency Lowering and Alarm

We check the manual or emergency lowering, the emergency stop and the alarm or communication device, so a user is never left stranded.

Platform, Structure and Markings

We inspect the platform, ramps, guide rails and enclosure for damage and wear, and confirm the rated load and maximum number of users are clearly marked.

FAQ

Platform Lift Inspection FAQs

How often does a platform lift need a LOLER examination?

At least every 6 months, because it lifts people. A written scheme of examination can shorten that, and an examination is also due after installation, major repair or anything that could affect safety.

Does LOLER apply to a platform lift used by the public?

Where the lift is provided at a workplace, LOLER applies. Where it is mainly used by visitors or the public, the HSE still expects it to be thoroughly examined to the same standard, so the 6-monthly examination is the safe approach either way.

Do inclined platform lifts and stairlifts count?

Yes. Inclined platform lifts and stairlifts provided at work lift people, so they need the same 6-monthly thorough examination as a vertical platform lift.

Is our maintenance visit the same as a LOLER examination?

No. Routine maintenance keeps the lift running, but LOLER needs a separate thorough examination by a competent person, with its own report. One does not replace the other.

Do you carry out examinations on site?

Yes. Our Engineer Surveyors come to your premises across Berkshire and the surrounding counties, and we issue reports promptly.
