PUWER - the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 - says work equipment must be suitable, safe and properly maintained, and inspected by a competent person wherever wear or damage could make it dangerous. It reaches far more kit than people expect: if your business puts equipment into someone's hands at work in London, the duty is yours.

How often do I need a PUWER inspection?
There is no fixed interval under PUWER. Equipment that could deteriorate into a dangerous state must be inspected at intervals a risk assessment and a competent person decide, and again after any exceptional event. Most businesses settle on at least yearly. The one exception is power presses, which carry statutory examination intervals of their own.
What's the difference between PUWER and LOLER?
PUWER covers almost all work equipment, while LOLER applies specifically to lifting equipment and lifting operations. A forklift falls under both - PUWER for the machine itself, LOLER for its lifting function. Businesses with lifting kit usually need both.
